Washington and Jefferson ran its first offensive play in a missing man formation, putting just 10 players on the field in memory of their fallen teammate, Tim McNerney. The Presidents never got the offense in gear, falling at Thomas More 54-18.
Thomas More scored the first 27 points of the game and never looked back in the win, with Adam Rauch running for 181 yards and a 91-yard touchdown.
Lake Forest knocked out Illinois College's star quarterback and then when he came back, kept him off the field with an 8-minute fourth-quarter drive to rally past the Blueboys 35-28. The loss is the first of the season for Illinois College, which started the year 4-0 after a surprise run to the playoffs in 2011.
Augsburg has a two-game winning streak against St. John's for the first time since the 1927-29 seasons as the Auggies rolled past the Johnnies 48-17. It's the first time the Johnnies have lost four games in a row in a single season since 1930.
Willamette outscored Northwest Conference rival Whitworth 24-7 in the second half to rally from a 17-14 halftime deficit and defeat the Pirates 38-24 in a battle of unbeatens. Heidelberg remained unbeaten as well, holding Capital under 200 yards of total offense in a 45-10 victory.
Castleton State got the Sap Bucket from Norwich for the first time with a 35-27 win, as the two Division III schools in the state of Vermont (other than Middlebury) squared off in a recent rivalry game. Middlebury and Norwich used to meet for the trophy before the NESCAC cut itself off from the rest of college football. Middlebury got a win of its own, however, defeating Amherst 24-3 behind 12 catches and two TDs from tight end Billy Chapman.
Hampden-Sydney handed Bridgewater its first loss of the season, as Nash Nance bounced back from last week's struggles at Catholic to complete 23 of 32 passes for 291 yards and two scores in a 24-7 win. Catholic, who was without star quarterback Greg Cordivari, fell to Randolph-Macon 45-12 on Friday night.
A.J. Springer averaged nearly 20 yards per completion and threw for six touchdowns as Sul Ross State sprinted past Mississippi College 75-42. The future Division II school fell to 1-4. Trine scored twice in the first three minutes as quarterback Ryan Hargraves got loose for an 83-yard run and Myron Puryear returned a fumble 79 yards in a 27-22 win against Albion. Adrian is also 2-0 in the MIAA after rolling over Alma 27-3.
Mass-Dartmouth led early but Salve Regina rolled in the final three quarters to defeat the Corsairs 57-21 and remain unbeaten. Chuck Beckwith had another career day for Alfred as the Saxons handed Ithaca its first loss, 31-7. Utica scored 30 fourth-quarter points as Utica rallied past Buffalo State 51-44.
Northwestern (Minn.) snapped St. Scholastica's 17-game UMAC winning streak, winning 14-13 in Duluth. Brian Lecheler, who you read about in Kickoff, returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to get things started for the Eagles, who stand alone in first place in the conference.
After two scoreless overtimes, Bluffton finally got a field goal in the third to defeat Rose-Hulman 37-34. Pacific put up its most points since 1930 in a 62-21 win against Puget Sound. The Loggers' only two wins in the past four years have come against Pacific, but the third-year program has won the past two meetings.
