Two quarterbacks seemingly broke the same Division III record for completion percentage in a game on Saturday, as Bethel's Erik Peterson had the best numbers of the day for all of nine minutes before Coe's Jared McNutt did him one better. However, in the end, neither of them holds the mark.
He threw for 315 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
However, neither of them turns out to be the record holder. Franklin was unaware that the week before, when Jonny West completed 20 of 21 passes against Anderson, that he actually set the mark. The minimum is 20 completions to qualify. The previous recorded best was a pair of 21-for-23 passing days, set by Monmouth's Mitch Tanney (2005) and St. Thomas' Chris Esterley (1995). |
Peterson completed 27 of 29 passes for Bethel
Peterson didn't have the upper hand, however. At the same time,
McNutt and Coe were in the final minutes of a 47-7 win against
Simpson. That contest ended at 3:38, with Mount Union coach Larry Kehres moved up on the all-time college football wins list, passing Bear Bryant with his 324th win as the top-ranked Purple Raiders rolled over Otterbein 51-0. Mount Union has not allowed a team to score since the season opener against Franklin. Cardinals quarterback Ben Sizemore was held to 11-for-28 passing for 68 yards and was picked off three times in the loss.

No. 10 UW-Oshkosh defeated fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater 28-13, handing the Warhawks their first WIAC loss since 2008 in front of 12,318 in Whitewater. Matt Behrendt came off the bench and completed 12 of his first 13 passes for 206 yards but couldn't keep the magic going as the Warhawks failed on a fourth down conversion at the Oshkosh 7 and later missed a 45-yard field goal. Nate Wara completed 16 of 24 passes for the Titans, who improved to 7-0, throwing for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Tim Filter had two interceptions for the Titans, both in the first half before Warhawks quarterback Lee Brekke was pulled from the game.
Mark Hiben caught two touchdown passes in the final four and a half minutes to help Wheaton (Ill.) rally and defeat No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan 38-33. Jordan Roberts found him twice as part of a three-touchdown day on 24-for-38 passing. No. 9 North Central (Ill.) is all alone in first place after a 42-10 win at Carthage.
Salisbury ran out to a 17-7 lead at the half and held on against an Alfred comeback in the fourth quarter as the No. 7 Sea Gulls defeated the No. 21 Saxons 24-21. Chuck Beckwith had two fourth-quarter touchdown runs to cut the Salisbury lead to three with 5:25 left, but Alfred never got the ball back as the Sea Gulls' ground game ran out the clock.
Hardin-Simmons took a 32-31 lead early in the fourth quarter at No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor but the Cru posted the last three scores of the game to win 45-32. LiDarral Bailey was picked off for just the second time all season, but his defense got his back by picking off HSU's Logan Turner four times.
No. 14 Widener overcame seven turnovers, four of them interceptions of quarterback Chris Haupt, and rallied with 14 fourth-quarter points to win 28-23 at Lycoming. The Pride scored twice in the final five minutes, capping it off with a 34-yard pass from Haupt to Anthony Davis with 17 seconds left for the win. It was yet another classic in a rivalry with a history of classics, something we touched on in this week's Triple Take.
Chris Rose completed 32 of 53 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winning 33-yard pass to freshman DJ Spencer with 1:26 remaining, as Cortland defeated No. 17 Rowan, 24-21. The Red Dragons face Kean, which beat TCNJ on Saturday, next week in a battle of NJAC unbeatens.
Josh Dean threw for 335 yards and two touchdowns but was picked off twice, one of which Dalton Richey returned 80 yards for a touchdown to help Pacific Lutheran defeat No. 22 Willamette 41-27 and hand the Bearcats their first loss.
No. 11 Hobart avenged its one regular-season loss from last year, rolling over RPI 35-7 behind a season-high 339 rushing yards. No. 6 Wesley did not trail for the first time all year, winning 30-13 in a cross-country trip to Menlo. No. 13 Wabash shut out Wooster 30-0 with backup quarterback Andy Walsh, playing in place of Chase Belton. No. 24 St. John Fisher struggled to throw the ball but had success on the ground as the Cardinals got three rushing TDs from Cody Miller in a 21-17 win against Ithaca.
