Hendrix got its Division III football life off to a rousing start, with a barnburner of a game that saw the Warriors knock off Westminster (Mo.) with a field goal in the closing seconds to win it.
Steve Crenshaw capped a wild back-and-forth game with a 25-yard field goal to lift Hendrix to a 46-45 win. Seth Peters completed 25 of 40 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns, while Dayton Winn added 146 yards on 20 carries for the Warriors.
Delaware Valley scored 28 points in the fourth quarter and rallied past Rowan 35-27 behind two touchdown passes and a touchdown run by Aaron Wilmer. It's the first time the Aggies have ever beaten the Profs.
Senior quarterback Jessie Maynard came off the bench to throw for a touchdown and run for another to help RPI get past Norwich 20-7 in the team's first game under new coach Ralph Isernia. Isernia's old team, Ferrum, trailed 42-0 at the half at Emory & Henry and went on to lose 49-13.
Ayrton Scott started his sophomore season the way he finished his freshman year at quarterback for Augsburg, rolling up the yards. He threw for 285 yards and ran for 197, accounting for four touchdowns as the Auggies defeated Concordia (Wis.) 51-17.
Dan Buonocore accounted for four of Salve Regina's five touchdowns, including a pair in the opening quarter to propel the Seahawks to a 36-7 win against Bridgewater State, one of the favorites in the new MASCAC football conference.
The new-look triple-option offense under new coach Chris Candeto at Capital never quite got going as Thomas More shut the Crusaders out 20-0. Thomas More outgained the Crusaders, 379-190, as Capital had 147 yards rushing and 43 yards passing. Domonique Hayden had 157 yards rushing for the Saints.
Misericordia entered the second year of its program without a win but Year Two is looking at least a little brighter as the Cougars trailed just 42-40 before Gettysburg pulled away to a 62-40 win. Last year Miseri lost its opened to Gettysburg 70-0. It was a good start to the new year for Olivet as well, which snapped a 14-game losing streak by defeating Wilmington 48-27. Braden Black was 16-for-19 passing for 349 yards and six touchdowns in the win.
Just days after Mississippi College discovered its appeal had been upheld and it would be allowed to choose Division II, Millsaps showed it just how long a trip that would be and made sure the Choctaws wouldn't take Backyard Brawl bragging rights with them. The Majors marched out to a 28-6 lead and rolled up 52 points on their archrivals in a 52-19 win.
The Washington and Lee defense forced four turnovers and came up with a key stop on a two-point conversion attempt with 29 seconds remaining to preserve a 14-13 victory over Franklin & Marshall. The Generals broke a 7-7 tie with 4:16 left in the game when junior running back Austin Eisenhofer scored on a 23-yard touchdown run.
Horton Walker caught 14 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns as Hampden-Sydney rolled past Averett 42-14. Maranatha Baptist outlasted Martin Luther in a crazy game in which Jordan DeLay caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Brandon McCormick with 1:06 left to lift the Crusaders past the Knights 56-54. The teams combined for 1,202 yards of total offense.
Hiram snapped an 18-game losing streak by defeating Westminster (Pa.) 23-19. Rob Partridge, a transfer who has played at Miami (Ohio) and Division II Notre Dame (Ohio), was 15-for-28 for 292 yards and a score in the win.

Matt Pawlowski hit Hayden Read with a 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 left in regulation to lift Guilford to a 31-28 win over Greensboro in the 17th annual Gate City Soup Bowl Saturday. This year's Soup Bowl game raised 7,091 non-perishable food items for the benefit of Greensboro Urban Ministry.
Crown opened a brand-new on-campus stadium to much fanfare but it was Macalester which stole the Storm's thunder at the end of the night, defeating Crown 31-14. Samson Bialastok threw for 147 yards for Macalester and ran for two touchdowns in the win.
Berry, Alfred State, Southern Virginia and Iowa Wesleyan each lost in their first game at the Division III level. Berry, playing its first game of football at any level, fell to Maryville 37-0.
