Ryan Cary's first night as the primary option in the Johns Hopkins backfield was a rousing success, as the junior running back scored the No. 15 Blue Jays' first four touchdowns in a 45-29 win vs. No. 20 Washington & Lee. The win came in the only game between ranked teams on Thursday night, the first night of the 2016 Division III football season.

Cary, who was sitting behind Stuart Walters and Brandon Cherry last season, made his presence felt in a big way, with 20 carries for 158 yards and 69 yards receiving in the win.

Johns Hopkins started with short fields after W&L's first two punts went 10 and 11 yards, respectively, and had an easy 14-0 lead. The Generals methodically drove twice to cut the lead to seven but never got any closer as Jonathan Germano was 20-for-29 passing and the Blue Jays converted six of 10 on third down, then twice more on fourth down.

Belhaven rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit and held on at the end to defeat crosstown rival Millsaps 28-25. Millsaps scored with 1:15 left to cut the lead to three and was unable to cover the onside kick. However, Belhaven, with its Air Raid offense, threw the ball on its next play and fumbled, giving Millsaps one last chance which fizzled out just past midfield. Hunter McEachern, the Belhaven quarterback D3football.com selected as its breakout player in the ASC in Kickoff 2016, was 30-for-55 passing for three touchdowns and no interceptions, while rushing for a touchdown as well in the win.

Trine picked off three passes, notched five sacks and held the Spartans to 5-of-18 on third downs as the Thunder defeated Manchester 23-9. Cornerback Marcus Winters paced the opportunistic defensive effort with a pair of interceptions, while Cayleel Hill had the third, at midfield with 2:58 left in the game. Trine was in the end zone six plays later to seal the win.

Robbie Plagens got picked off three times in his first start since taking over as Baldwin Wallace quarterback, but Austin Smith picked him up, rushing 24 times for 91 yards and three touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets rolled past Defiance 42-0. BW picked up two fumbles in return and held Defiance to 183 yards of total offense.
