The oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi River added a unique chapter today at Clark Field. In the 113th matchup between Coe and Cornell, the two teams combined to score the most points in a single game in NCAA Division III history.
In a game that featured 18 touchdowns, a 28-yard field goal from Coe kicker Michael Herzberger gave Coe the lead for the final time with two seconds to go.
Other key statistics include:
-> Cornell scored the most points by a losing team (63) in NCAA Division III history
-> The two teams combined for 1,302 yards of total offense. Cornell had 688 yards and Coe totaled 614 yards.
-> Coe junior quarterback Joe Brannen threw for 420 yards, completing 25-of-34 passing and five touchdowns. He carried the ball five times for 26 yards and two touchdowns.
-> Brannen's 420 passing yards was the second most in school history and five touchdown passes ties the school record.
-> Cornell quarterback Chris Lovely threw for 308 yards, completing 19-of-28 passing and four touchdowns. He carried the ball 22 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
-> Cornell wide receiver Matt Ditch caught 10 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He carried the ball one time for a seven-yard touchdown.
-> Coe fullback Ashton Northern caught six passes for 74 yards and three touchdowns.
-> There were eight ties and five lead changes.
-> Most points scored in an Iowa Conference football game.
-> Time of possession was almost equal: Coe 29:50 – Cornell 30:10.
The game was marked by an offensive battle with the teams trading touchdowns and the lead throughout the contest.
With the score tied at 63-63 with under a minute to play, Cornell quarterback Chris Lovely was intercepted by senior defensive back Bradley McCloskey at the Coe 45-yard line. Coe quarterback Joe Brannen completed three passes of 13, 25 and 11 yards to set up Herzberger's game-winning field goal.
