Cru Pulls Away In Second Half

More news about: Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas — Mary Hardin Baylor took advantage of two Hardin-Simmons turnovers in the third quarter to go from a 14-10 halftime lead to a 35-10 lead after three quarters and the Cru beat HSU, 35-17, winning for the 10th straight time in American Southwest Conference action at Shelton Stadium.

HSU trailed 14-10 and had forced a punt by the Cru to start the third quarter. It looked like the Cowboys were going to take the lead when Travis Tatsch was open behind the defense, but the pass sailed just over his head. Two plays later Andy McAteer intercepted a Taylor Byrd pass and ran it to the eight yard line.

LiDarral Bailey hit Tucker Glaske on a touchdown pass from six yards out on third and goal and the Cru led 21-10. HSU then went three and out and the Cru went 80 yards in nine plays and Darius Wilson capped the drive with a 23 yard touchdown run for a 28-10 lead.

On the Cowboys' next possession Zach Stewart's passed was kicked in the air on a low catch attempt by Travis Tatsch, Allen Dixon picked it up right before it hit the ground for another interception. Bailey hit Ervin Johnson on a 28-yard touchdown on the next play and the Cru led 35-10.

HSU took the initial lead in the game as Scott Newberry hit a 26-yard field goal to make it 3-0 with 6:40 to play in the first quarter. UMHB responded with a pair of touchdown drives. Elijah Hudson had a 1-yard run and Wilson had a 7-yard touchdown with 4:23 to play in the first half to make it 14-3.

The Cowboys used a fake field goal to setup a score right before halftime. Tatsch, who was the holder ran the fake over the right side for a first down. Three plays later Byrd made it 14-10 when he hit Tatsch on an 8-yard touchdown pass with :08 to play in the half.

HSU added a late touchdown when Stewart hit Logan Simpson on a 48-yard touchdown pass.

UMHB had a balanced attack with 244 yards rushing and 201 passing for 445 total. HSU had 360 total yards.

Byrd was 15-of-24 with an interception and a touchdown. Stewart was 5-for-14 for 97 yards and he also had a touchdown and interception. Bailey was 16-for-20 for 201 yards and two touchdowns.

Ty Dooley had 15 tackles for Mary Hardin-Baylor and Javicz Jones added 13. Emmanuel Akers had a career-best 13 tackles for HSU.

The Cowboys have lost two straight and are 2-2 on the year and 0-2 in ASC play. UMHB is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in ASC action. HSU plays at East Texas Baptist next week at 6 p.m.
