Emory & Henry Downs Guilford in Season Finale

More news about: Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Devan Sproles made three interceptions, Matt Turchin made three field goals and Kyle Boden threw two touchdowns in Emory & Henry College's 30-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football win at Guilford College Saturday.

The Wasps (5-5, 2-4 ODAC) made four interceptions in the season finale for both teams, including two that led to touchdowns. Anthony Jones picked off a Zac Halbert pass at his own five-yard line, which stopped a potential Guilford (2-8, 1-5 ODAC) scoring opportunity and triggered a nine-play, 84-yard scoring drive. Along the way, Boden completed a 46-yard pass to Adrian Jordan that turned into a 61-yard Wasps' gain after a Guilford personal foul. The play shifted the field and set up Boden's 10-yard scoring strike to Sam Edmonds (6 rec., 63 yards) that opened a 10-0 second-quarter lead.

The Quakers answered with their best drive and pulled to within 10-6 on Halbert's eight-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Blake. A 51-yard completion to Trey Billian, plus a nine-yard personal foul penalty on Emory & Henry put the Quakers on the Wasps' nine-yard line.

Turchin's second field goal, a 35-yarder, capped an 11-play, 55-yard drive that gave the guests a 13-6 lead that lasted into the fourth quarter.

Joseph Vaughn (6 carries, 46 yards) put the Wasps up 20-6 in the fourth quarter with a 38-yard touchdown run. The one-play scoring drive came after Emory & Henry kept the Quakers pinned inside their own five-yard line. A short punt resulted in excellent field position for the Wasps.

On Guilford's next series, Sproles picked off his third pass of the game. Three plays later Boden hit Jordan from 12 yards out to put the game out of reach.

Turchin, who opened the day's scoring with a 46-yard field goal, set an Emory & Henry season standard with his 11th field goal, a 32-yard boot with 27 seconds left in regulation.

Boden completed 25-of-46 passes for 264 yards to nine different receivers. Preston Jennings was his favorite target with seven catches, which helped the junior set a Wasps' season mark with 71 receptions this season.

Sproles, the ODAC's leading tackler, fell one interception shy of the Emory & Henry record for thefts in a game (4), shared by Steve Munsey (1990) and Thomas Nelson (1996). He finished with nine stops, including one of two Emory & Henry sacks. Jason Hill had a team-high 11 tackles (5 solo) and Michael Young added nine (4 solo).

Guilford's Halbert completed 24-of-53 passes for 246 yards. Ben King made 11 catches for 87 yards in his final contest as a Quaker. Billian finished with three grabs for 85 yards, both career highs. Robert Smith made a game-high 13 tackles on defense.
