THROGGS NECK, N.Y. -- Junior quarterback Zack Chilcott's (Ulster Park, N.Y.) one-yard touchdown run with 1:33 remaining lifted SUNY-Maritime to a 31-30 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the Seventh Annual Chowder Bowl played Thursday evening at Reinhart Field.
The host Privateers (1-1) erased a 14-3 halftime deficit in a see-saw second half of action, as Chilcott got SUNY-Maritime back to within three with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter on a 13-yard scoring scamper before hooking up on a two-point conversion pass to senior Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y.), who gave the Privateers an 18-14 lead less than four minutes later with a four-yard touchdown run. The visiting Buccaneers (0-1) answered back with an 11-play, 56-yard drive capped by junior David Yerxa's (Milford, Conn.) one-yard plunge 1:27 into the final frame, but the hosts responded on the ensuing possession when Chilcott connected with sophomore Brian Leonard (Selden, N.Y.) on a 24-yard touchdown pass and a 25-21 SUNY-Maritime lead with 9:34 to play.
Massachusetts Maritime took the lead for the final time on the night on its next possession, as senior quarterback John Trudel (Niantic, Conn.) connected with sophomore Aidan Desrosiers (North Attleboro, Mass.) for the second time on the evening from three yards out to cap a 14-play, 79-yard drive and give the Buccaneers a 28-25 advantage with 4:41 to play. Chilcott took over near midfield and directed SUNY-Maritime on a seven-play, 59-yard drive over a 3:08 span to score the game-winner, as the Privateers forced an interception of a Trudel pass by senior Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y.) on his own 44-yard line with 31 seconds to play. Massachusetts Maritime held on the first three downs of the possession and forced the hosts into a 49-yard loss for a safety with six seconds remaining to close to within one, and the visitors ran the kickoff back to the hosts' 40-yard-line as time expired.
Junior Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) gave SUNY-Maritime a 3-0 lead with four seconds remaining in the opening stanza on a 24-yard field goal, but the Buccaneers responded with a 10-play, 59-yard drive to ake a 6-3 lead with 9:32 to play in the half on a 10-yard connection from Trudel to Desrosiers. The Privateers drove down to the Massachusetts Maritime 2-yard line on its their ensuing possession before turning the ball over on downs, and the hosts had the ball on their own 34-yard late in the half before a Chilcott fumble was recovered and returned 30 yards for a touchdown by Buccaneer senior Victor Andrade (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) with 1:21 remaining before intermission (Andrade's second career fumble return for a score). Trudel and fellow senior Jonathon Wright (Newburyport, Mass.) hooked up on a two-point conversion pass that staked the visitors to their 14-3 halftime lead, setting up Chilcott's second half heroics.
Chilcott rushed for 191 yards on 29 carries while adding 168 more yards through the air on a 9-of-14 passing effort for SUNY-Maritime, as he finished the evening with 367 of the hosts' 524 yards of total offense. Caneparo added 116 rushing yards on 10 carries for the Privateers, who rushed for 356 yards on 70 attempts. Trudel amassed 273 of Massachusetts Maritime's 329 yards of total offense on the evening, as he rushed for 83 yards on 24 carries while completing 21-of-34 pass attempts for 190 yards and two scores. Sophomore Shane Haggerty (Cohasset, Mass.) hauled in seven catches for 52 yards for the Buccaneers, who also received four receptions and 62 yards from senior Bobby Rosano (North Reading, Mass.).
Junior Brian Price (New York, N.Y.) recorded nine total tackles (seven solo) to lead the way defensively for SUNY-Maritime, which also received eight tackles from senior Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y.) and a pair of picks from Klass. Senior Richard Ford (Lynn, Mass.) led Massachusetts Maritime on the defensive side a career high 13 total tackles (11 solo), while fellow senior Reynard Ortiz (Lowell, Mass.) added nine total tackles (eight solo). Andrade chipped in with eight stops (six solo) to go with his fumble return for the Buccaneers, who also received seven tackles from senior Kevin Stanton (Abington, Mass.). SUNY-Maritime held the ball for nearly 37 minutes on the night in reclaiming the Chowder Bowl after last year's 24-20 Massachusetts Maritime triumph in Buzzards Bay, as the Privateers have won six of the seven matchups in the trophy series, with the last two in The Bronx being decided in the final 113 seconds of action combined.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Maine Maritime in the 42nd Annual Admiral's Cup contest on Saturday, September 20th at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at Noon, while SUNY-Maritime heads over to Kings Point, N.Y. on Saturday, September 20th for the Seafaring Scuffle with the United States Merchant Marine Academy that kicks off at 1:00 p.m.
