NEWBERG, Ore. – Pacific relied on the rushing game to overcome high winds and earn their first shutout since the end of the 1972 season Saturday as the Boxers renewed their Northwest Conference football rivalry with George Fox with a 36-0 blanking of the Bruins at Stoffer Family Stadium.
The Boxers rushed for 225 of the team's 395 yards of total offense, with most of it even distributed between four running backs. Deven McKinney (Sr., Spanaway, Wash.) led the team with 62 yards and a touchdown, all of which came on the final drive of the game. Kamana Pimental (So., Kaneohe, Hawaii) rushed 13 times for 55 yards and a touchdown. Bronson Barretto (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) carried seven times for 50 yards while Bobby Ladiges (Jr., Escalon, Calif.) rushed 14 times for 40 yards and a score.
The shutout was the first for Pacific football since the Boxers laid a 35-0 blanking on Southern Oregon to end the 1972 season and was the 10th shutout in 13 games all-time between Pacific and George Fox. The win allowed Pacific to improve to 4-2 overall and 4-0 NWC, the best conference start in program history.
Quarterback Warner Shaw (Jr., Waimea, Hawaii) completed 11 of 17 passes against the wind for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Darin Kamealoha (Sr., Waipahu, Hawaii) caught two passes for 69 yards, both for touchdowns.
Bruins' quarterback Grant Schroeder completed 14 of 27 passes for 143 yards to lead the George Fox offense. Brad lander caught seven balls for 84 yards. John Shaffer was the Bruins' leading rusher, carrying 15 times for 47 yards. Pacific limited the Bruins (0-6, 0-4 NWC) to 182 yards of total offense and just 39 rushing yards.
After winning the toss, Pacific deferred to the second half in order to take advantage of the direction of the blustery wind. The decision paid off immediately as the Boxers scored on their first drive after forcing George Fox three-and-out on their first possession. Taking over on the Bruins' 45-yard line, the Boxers used short running plays and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Shaw to Kamealoha for the touchdown six minutes into the contest.
It ended up being the score of the quarter as both defenses took control. After the Bruins' second three-and-out of the game, Charles Riga forced Shaw to fumble and George Fox took over near midfield. Pacific forced the Bruins to punt and Brandon Harms (Sr., Canby, Ore.) set the Boxers up well with a 70-yard punt return, the second longest in school history, that put the ball at the George Fox 10-yard line. The George Fox defense followed with a goal line stand as the Boxers turned the ball over on downs at the one-yard line.
Pacific found the end zone again on their first drive of the second quarter. A 38-yard punt return by Harms allowed the Boxers to begin at the George Fox 38-yard line and Ladiges ended the six-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run that gave Pacific a 14-0 lead with 8:14 left in the first half. Trey Kodama (So., Pearl City, Hawaii) forced running back Jouva Robinson to fumble at the Pacific 15-yard line to end the Bruins' next drive, but the Boxers were unable to convert as the 14-0 lead held going into halftime.
The Boxers wouldn't score again until midway through the third quarter. After a number of short rushing gains, Shaw found Kamealoha on a screen pass and the senior ran 59 yards to the end zone as the Boxers went up 21-0 with 4:42 left in the frame. The Bruins had their deepest drive into Pacific territory on their next series, but turned the ball over on downs again after two incomplete passes at the Pacific 33-yard line.
Pacific turned to Moses Villareal-Gomez (Sr., Stockton, Calif,) for the first score of the fourth quarter as he connected on a 19-yard field goal at the 13:20 mark. Another three-and-out for the Bruins yielded the drive that closed it out for the Boxers as Pimental rushed eight yards for the touchdown to end a 12-play, 77-yard drive. With the game well decided, the Boxers saw McKinney rush for 68 of the team's 84 yards on the final drive and scored his first touchdown of the season as time expired.
Jack Perez (Jr., Petaluma, Calif.) once again led the Pacific defense with seven tackles, including a half sack and 1.5 tackles for loss as Pacific finished with four sacks and eight tackles for loss. Harms finished six solo tackles to go along with his 105 return yards.Josh Brinkworth (Sr., Elk Grove, Calif.) also had three tackles. Riga and Adrian Bonner each had eight tackles to lead George Fox.
