More news about: Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Aaron Abbott caught a deflected 36-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Austin Swenson in the final minute as the Fightin' Engineers topped Manchester University 38-37 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football action on Saturday.

The wild affair featured a 31-0 lead for Rose-Hulman late in the first half, before Manchester rallied to gain a 37-31 advantage in the fourth quarter.  The Fightin' Engineers then scored the game winning touchdown with 43 seconds left, before junior Chris Sander sealed the victory with an interception on the final Manchester drive.

Swenson finished 33-57 through the air for 318 yards and two touchdowns to lead Rose-Hulman's 484-yard offensive attack.  Sophomore Alec Fisher had 12 receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown, and Abbott hauled in eight catches for 103 yards and the winning score to lead the receiving effort.  Sophomore Joe Moehrle pitched in with seven receptions for 61 yards.

Swenson set single-season Rose-Hulman school records for passing completions (252), passing yards (2,884) and tied the mark for touchdowns (24) on the afternoon.  Senior Greg Lee led the Rose-Hulman ground attack with 77 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown.

Logan Haston led the Manchester offense by finishing 28-45 passing for 392 yards, and Dakota Nelson had seven catches for 147 yards for the Spartans.

Defensively, sophomore Kevin Nowak led Rose-Hulman with nine tackles, a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown and two tackles-for-loss.  Freshman Tyler Brutofsky and Elijah Lloyd had eight tackles each.  Sophomore Marlin O'Neal had seven stops and three tackles-for-loss, and senior Josh Sonneberger also had seven hits.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Nowak's interception return opened the scoring, and Lee scored from one yard out on Rose-Hulman's first offensive drive to make the score 14-0.

Later in the first quarter, Lee threw his first career touchdown pass on a trick play throw back to Swenson for a seven-yard touchdown.  Junior Craig Larew booted a 30-yard field goal to cap the 24-point first quarter.

Rose-Hulman pushed the lead to 31-0 with 5:31 left in the first half on a 16-play, 80-yard drive.  Swenson connected with Fisher for his school record setting 13th touchdown catch of the season on a three-yard strike.

Manchester started its march with two touchdowns in the final minute of the first half.  The Spartans scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Haston to Collin Huffine, then closed the first half with a 41-yard hail mary pass on the final play of the half to Brandon Webb.

The Spartans continued their march to tie the score at 31-31 by the end of the third quarter on an eight-yard run by Haston, a 44-yard scoring pass from Haston to Matt Wirick, and a 20-yard field goal by Dakota Smith.

Manchester gained the lead with two field goals inside the red zone, but the Fightin' Engineer defense held twice inside the 10-yard line to force field goal attempts.  Smith hit a 24-yard field goal with 5:00 left to make the score 34-31, then added a 22-yard kick at the 2:13 mark as Manchester's lead reached 37-31.

Rose-Hulman had one final chance to answer, and an eight-play, 76-yard march led to the win.  Swenson completed a 12-yard pass to Moehrle and hit Fisher with three straight completions to move the ball into Manchester territory.  After Swenson rushed for 15 yards to the Manchester 32, the Engineers were forced into a 3rd-and-14 on the 36-yard line.

Swenson connected with Abbott on a deflected pass at the 15-yard line, then the junior receiver sprinted to the endzone for the game winning score.  Sander intercepted the first pass of Haston on Manchester's final possession to secure the win.

Rose-Hulman improved to 6-2 on the season and 4-2 in HCAC play, while Manchester dropped to 3-5 and 2-4 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers hit the road for Mount St. Joseph and another conference matchup next week.
