Maritime All-Time SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients

ALBANY, N.Y. – The State University of New York (SUNY) recently announced its recipients for the 2014-15 SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award, with two Maritime student-athletes being selected for the prestigious award for their success both in the classroom and in their field of competition.

The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize academic excellence as well as outstanding athletic achievement. SUNY offers the awards on four different levels; Division I, SUNYAC, Independent and Junior College. Maritime is listed within the independent group with the likes of Farmingdale, Old Westbury, Purchase, Cobleskill, SUNY Polytechnic, Morrisville, Canton, and SUNY ESF.

Of that group of institutions, student-athletes are nominated by their athletic director, followed by their credentials being submitted and reviewed by a panel of athletic directors from all across the SUNY system as well as the provost's office to select the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athletes.

Earning selections this year were senior Hayley Hobbs (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) of the women's swimming team, and junior Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) of the football team.

The pair becomes the 23rd and 24th Maritime student-athletes, respectively, to receive the award that was initially awarded following the 2004-05 academic year. Hobbs becomes the third member from the women's swimming team to earn the honor, and first since 2006-07, when Alyson Paz '08 was awarded for the second straight year. Warrington is the fourth football player to receive the honor, and second straight as he joins classmate Diogo Dietrich, who picked up the distinction last season.

As a senior with the women's swimming team, Hobbs recently graduated with her degree in Naval Architecture from Maritime, and was also a member of Maritime's NROTC program. The three-year member of the Maritime swimming team was a Skyline Conference First Team selection in the Women's 100 Butterfly, and was also a second team honoree in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

In addition she was a one-time Skyline Swimmer of the Week as a senior, and also received honor roll recognition once during the 2014-15 season. During her senior season, she also set a career personal-best time in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 1:00.97 at the 2014-15 Skyline Conference Championship Swim Meet in late January.

Warrington continues to add to his academic accolades as the junior defensive back plans to obtain his U.S. Coast Guard Deck License as he majors in Marine Transportation while at Maritime. In addition to his SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award, Warrington has also obtained CoSIDA Academic All-Region Team selections as both a sophomore and junior, while also being named to the All-Academic Team of the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference for each of his last two seasons as well.

On the field, Warrington led the team this past season in pass breakups this past season and over his 21 career games has 12 to his credit. In addition, he also has 73 career tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery that went for a touchdown and also has a blocked kick.

Both Hobbs and Warrington were recognized for their awards at the annual Athletics Honors Banquet in late April, a full recap of the banquet is available at THIS LINK.
