W&L Football Marches Past Bridgewater, 45-23

More news about: Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team gained 605 yards of total offense and moved to 7-0 overall with a 45-23 win over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The win was the 500th in program history, as the Generals improved to 500-522-39 across their 123 seasons of varsity football.  W&L is also now 4-0 in ODAC play.

The Blue & White was stunted offensively by a pair of lost fumbles in the opening half and the Generals carried just a five-point lead (21-16) into the halftime break.  However, W&L gained control quickly in the second half, driving 72 yards in eight plays on the opening drive and junior running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) scored from 1-yard out to give W&L a 28-16 lead at the 12:10 mark.

First-year defensive back Thomas Freeland (Franklin, Tenn. / Ensworth) picked off BC (3-4, 1-3) senior quarterback Ross Rushing (Monroe, N.C./Metrolina Christian) on the third play of the next series and the Generals marched 47 yards on three plays, with sophomore running back McKenna Johnston (Jupiter, Fla. / Benjamin School) scoring on a 22-yard touchdown run for a 35-16 lead just 4:40 into the second half.

Junior running back Connor Chess (Fairfax, Va. / Flint Hill) capped an 11-play, 94-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run for a 42-16 lead at 13:46 of the fourth quarter and junior placekicker Matt Underhill (Bethesda, Md. / Landon) finished off a 24-point run for the Generals with a 22-yard field goal with 3:57 left in the game for a 45-16 lead.

In the first half, W&L jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter following a 5-yard touchdown run by Hollerith and a 4-yard touchdown scamper from Chess.  Sophomore running back Duncan Maxwell (Jackson, Miss. / Jackson Academy) added another score on a 35-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Overall, the Generals ran for 506 yards and completed 6-of-8 passes for 99 yards in tallying the 605 total yards.  Maxwell led the way with a career-high 101 yards and one touchdown on nine carries.  He also caught two passes for 42 yards.  Hollerith gained 101 yards and scored two touchdowns on 14 carries, while Chess gained 78 yards and scored twice on 10 rushes.  Johnston added 71 yards and a touchdown on four rushes, and junior quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn. / St. Luke's) posted 50 yards on eight carries and completed 4-of-6 passes for 72 yards.

On defense, W&L was paced by sophomore cornerback Grey Reames (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell) and Freeland, who totaled eight tackles each.  Freeland added an interception.

Bridgewater gained 398 total yards in the game led by Rushing, who completed 24-of-37 passes for 216 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.  Senior running back Kevon White (Midlothian, Va./James River) rushed 19 times for 93 yards and a touchdown, while junior wide receiver Jeffrey Moore (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) snared a team-best six passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore defensive back Jason Monroe (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) recorded a game-high 11 tackles and recovered a fumble for BC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
