NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Sophomore quarterback Tristan Chester (Charlestown, Ind.) figured in on both Homecoming 2016 touchdowns for Manchester University Saturday, Oct. 8, but it wasn't enough to elude a hard-nosed defensive effort by visiting Defiance College.
Chester scrambled around the right side of the line in the third quarter for a nine-yard paydirt plunge after finding sophomore running back Tyler Pruitt (Springfield, Ohio) for a two-yard touchdown to wrap up an 11-play, 66-yard march that started in the first period and concluded early in the second frame. Despite those end zone appearances in front of a cheering crowd of nearly 2,000 fans at Carl W. Burt Memorial Field, the Yellow Jackets reversed both Spartan scores with three of their own to up their record to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference behind a 20-14 decision.
Most of the reason came from a defensive unit that produced a pair of big interceptions and sacked the Black and Gold signal caller four times during the afternoon. Due to those factors, three other home team offensive opportunities closed as they appeared to be heading towards adding more points to the scoreboard. DC also received two 60-yard-plus rushing efforts from backs Corey Bennett and Lamar Dixon, while quarterback Logan Scott heated up late to wind up with 134 yards passing.
Chester finished with 171 yards passing, 81 of which were thrown to sophomore wide receiver Louis Medina (Frankfort, Ind.). The upperclassman linebacking duo of junior Jack Kay (Williamsport, Ind.) and senior Nate Birk (Indianapolis, Ind) led the defense with each recording double-digit tackle totals.
Manchester University (0-5 overall, 0-3 HCAC) begins back-to-back road contests Saturday, Oct. 15, traveling to Rose-Hulman.
