Blue Devils take I-94 trophy for second straight year

MENOMONIE (October 15, 2016) - UW-Stout were able to secure the War on I-94 trophy two years running as they downed the UW-Eau Claire, 30-7, at Don and Nona Williams Stadium Saturday night.

The Blue Devils racked up 441 yards of total offense, running for 289 yards and three touchdowns. The defense also stood tall and was able to limit Eau Claire to only 174 yards of total offense. Adolfo Pacheco led the Blue Devils on the ground, returning to a younger form of himself to rush for 119 yards and a TD on 11 rushes.

UW-Stout (3-3, 1-2 WIAC) quarterback Jay Alston got the party started on a designed QB rush for 11 yards. Drew Pearson added another field goal on the season at the 3:29 mark in the first quarter. Stout was up 10-0.

The defense kept getting stops in the first so that the offense could keep moving. In the first half, the Blue Devil defense held the Blugolds (1-5, 0-3 WIAC) to only three first downs. The offense added another 10 points in the second quarter on another run, he scampered on a quarterback scramble for 43 yards, the longest play of his career. Pearson kicked the ball four yards farther (47-yard field goal) on the next Blue Devil drive. Stout entered halftime up 20-0.

The third quarter opened in a furry. On the second play of the quarter, only 20 seconds into the third and on the first play from scrimmage, Pacheco found daylight and left the Eau Claire defense in a cloud of dust as he ran for 85 yards and the TD. Pacheco's run was the second longest running play from scrimmage at Williams Stadium and the longest play of his career.

Eau Claire was able to score soon after as they drove for 16 plays, on a seven minute drive minutes. They ended the drive on a two-yard pass from JT Denhartog to Tye MClaughlin.

Stout added one more score in the fourth quarter. Pearson kicked a 44-yard field goal to make the Blue Devil score an even 30 points.

The Blue Devils took home the trophy for the second year in a row and taking the I-94 series lead 5-4.

Pacheco's 119 yards was the most yards in a game since his freshman year and his first 100-yard game since his sophomore year. Alston's 96 yards was the most in his career. Stout's 289 yards on the ground was the most rushing in a single games since the 2010 season.

Alston was also 17-of-32 for 152 yards in passing. Chris Pica-Anderson had six catches for 64 yards for Stout. The Blue Devil defense was able to force two fumbles in the game and sacked the quarterback five times for 26 yards. Iyen Ogbomoh had two of the sacks and had four tackles.

Eau Claire's top performers included quarterback JT Denhartog who had 33 yards rushing. Denhartog was held to 6-of-15 for 57 yards passing.
