BUENA VISTA, VA. – The William Paterson football team (2-5, 1-5 NJAC) lost at Southern Virginia (2-5, 1-5 NJAC), 26-17, Oct. 22.

The Pioneers cashed in on the first possession of the game when senior Pat Moran (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) kicked a 25-yard field goal, making it a 3-0 score with 8:10 remaining in the first quarter.

The Knights recovered a fumble at the WP-30 and turned it into points thanks to a Ty Jones three-yard run and Sam Horman PAT, pulling ahead by a 7-3 count with 7:24 left in the second quarter.

Freshman defensive back Mitch Orme returned a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown, and after a missed extra point, Southern Virginia owned a 13-3 advantage 25 seconds before halftime.

A Pioneer fumble led to a 35-yard rushing touchdown for Jones. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, and the Knights were ahead 19-3 with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

WP answered with a 42-yard pass from junior quarterback James Waldron (Edison, N.J./Edison) to senior wide receiver Anthony DiMarsico (Stony Point, N.Y./Suffern), and Waldron added a carry for the two-point conversion for a 19-11 margin with 1:28 to play in the third.

Waldron found senior wide receiver Malcolm Robinson (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) for a four-yard TD, but the potential game-tying two-point pass fell incomplete, and the Pioneers trailed 19-17 with 5:27 remaining in the contest.

A 64-yard Jones run pushed Southern Virginia ahead by a 26-17 count three minutes later.

Junior quarterback Isaiah Diaz-Mays (Hoboken, N.J./Union City) was 6-for-11 for 54 yards and an interception, and Waldron finished 11-for-19 for 157 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Junior running back Aqeel Daniels-Lundy (Edison, N.J./Edison) carried seven times for 33 yards, while DiMarsico caught six passes for 98 yards and a score.

Freshman defensive lineman Brandon Yaw (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) led the Pioneers with 11 tackles (four solo, 1.5 TFL), and Moran posted 10 stops (five solo, 2.5 TFL). Freshman linebacker Taheem Jackson (East Orange, N.J./East Orange Campus) added seven tackles.

Jones was 1-for-6 for 11 yards under center, and rushed 14 times for 116 yards and three touchdowns.

Sophomore linebacker Marcos Garcia paced the Knights with eight tackles (five solo, 1.0 TFL), a fumble forced and recovered. Orme added seven stops (six solo) to his fumble return for a score, and freshman defensive lineman Ty Clegg had seven tackles (five solo, 1.0 TFL).

The Pioneers will play at The College of New Jersey Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2:00 p.m.
