WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University opened up its 2017 football season Saturday night with a 40-14 non-league victory over Gallaudet University.
Playing before 1024 soggy Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium fans, Shenandoah (1-0) rebounded from an end zone fumble on its opening possession to score 33 unanswered points and coast home to its sixth victory in seven lifetime meetings with Gallaudet (0-1).
SU rode the arm of junior quarterback Hayden Bauserman to the victory – Bauserman was 32 for 56 for 394 yards and four touchdowns against one interception and one fumble on a sack.
That sack, at the end of the first half, was the only time GU was able to get to Bauserman all evening.
The junior completed passes to eight different receivers (backup Ben Agostino added two more) with senior Michael Ashwell grabbing 10 balls for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore Casey Stewart also had two TD catches – both came in the second quarter and increased the Hornets lead to 27-7 by the 10:41 mark of the stanza.
Defensively, Shenandoah forced four turnovers (two fumble recoveries and two interceptions) while getting a pair of sacks.
Sophomore Bernie Hayes III gave his club the lead for good on one of those turnovers – his 35-yard scoop-and-score put SU up 13-7 with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter.
Stewart's two TDs followed before Ashwell completed a 10-play, 70-yard drive with a four-yard TD catch from Bauserman exactly five minutes into the third.
Hayes and Andy Sartain each had eight tackles for the Hornets with Hayes contributing four tackles for loss and the fumble recovery for touchdown.
The Hornets rolled up 556 yards in total offense (437 through the air) and had 28 first downs.
Gallaudet, which had scoring drives of 80 and 81 yards, had 324 in total offense including 250 on the ground.
Shenandoah begins a four-game road trip next Saturday night with a 7 p.m. non-league game at N.C. Wesleyan.
