DOVER, Del. – The No. 22/23 ranked Wesley College football team recorded their third consecutive shutout of the season with a 49-0 victory over the Southern Virginia Knights on Saturday in Wesley's 2017 home opener at Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium.
The Wesley defense held the Knights to 120 yards of total offense. 10 of Southern Virginia's 13 offensive drives either ended in three-and-outs (8) or turnovers (2). Mike Sabino paced the Wesley defense with six tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hurry.
Sabino was an integral part of Cappadonna Miller's interception in the first quarter when he tipped Ty Jones' pass up in the air and Miller came down with the ball. Stephen Yorkman caused the other Southern Virginia turnover early in the second quarter when he bull-rushed up the middle and forced a Jewka Patetefa fumble. Yorkman then recovered his own fumble.
Stefon Woodruff collected 2.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack while Ray Mangold registered two tackles for loss.
Daquay Harris-Winbush blocked a Jackson Hatch's fourth quarter 42-yard field goal attempt to help preserve the shutout.
The Wesley offense was balanced throughout gaining 228 rushing yards and 213 passing yards. Wesley notched 24 first downs and averaged 9.3 yards per play.
Khaaliq Burroughs went 15-of-19 passing for 181 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Burroughs also ran in Wesley's opening score of the game on a three-yard quarterback keeper off tackle.
E.J. Lee continued his strong running to start the season, gaining 104 yards on 17 carries. He scored three rushing touchdowns for the Wolverines. Marcquan Greenecame in the game late and tallied 50 rushing yards on four totes.
Three different Wesley receivers caught touchdown passes from Burroughs. James Okike reeled in seven catches for 102 yards and a leaping touchdown reception over a Southern Virginia cornerback. Alex Kemp caught five passes for 65 yards and a late second-quarter touchdown. Andrew Eagle registered his first collegiate touchdown on a five-yard catch from Burroughs in the first quarter.
Nick Bruhn went a perfect 7-for-7 in point-after attempts.
The Wolverines (3-1, 3-0 NJAC) will head to Western Maryland next Saturday to battle with the No. 11 ranked Frostburg St. Bobcats in a crucial Top-25 matchup. Kickoff from Bobcat Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
