TIFFIN -- Things didn't go as planned.
In a matchup between two ranked foes, the No. 2 Mount Union Purple Raiders trounced the No. 21 Heidelberg University football team, 63-7. Mount Union scored on the game's opening play from scrimmage and never looked back.
The loss drops the Student Princes from the ranks of the unbeaten. HU is now 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union steamrolls to 5-0, 4-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount Union quarterback D'Angelo Fulford hit Jared Ruth for a short pass that turned into a 70-yard touchdown on the first play. The touchdown seemed to set the tone for what would be a tough afternoon.
Trailing 14-0 in the first, Heidelberg embarked on its only touchdown drive of the afternoon. Aided by a personal foul and a defensive pass interference call, The Berg went 75 yards on six plays. Tyler Stoyle hit Tony Morris in the end zone for the score. Austin Baker added the point after.
The Purple Raiders led 21-7 after one and 42-7 at halftime. After adding 21 more points in the third quarter, MTU was able to take its foot off the gas pedal.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
On a windy afternoon, Stoyle was 18-for-43 for 217 yards. He threw two picks along with the touchdown.
Cameron Vocke had 80 yards from scrimmage -- 31 rushing and 49 receiving.
Punter Austin Baker uncorked a nice 69-yard punt in the 4th to set a new career high.
NOTABLE QUOTES
"They have such a good defensive line," said head coach Scott Donaldson. "We didn't do a good enough job up front to protect Stoyle … The routes were there, we just couldn't get the ball off."
Donaldson on MTU's offense: "Their offensive line played extremely well … That opening play really took all of the momentum out of us."
Donaldson on moving forward: "We have to focus on the game upcoming … We can't change the past, we have to prepare hard this next week for Otterbein."
UP NEXT
Heidelberg hosts Otterbein (4-1, 3-1 OAC) next Saturday, looking to rebound from the loss against Mount Union and to avenge last year's loss to the Cardinals in Westerville. The Rhine River Cup game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, under the lights at Hoernemann Stadium.
