Cleveland, Ohio, Oct. 28, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team fell behind 21-0 after one quarter and could not regroup in a 45-28 loss at No. 17-ranked Case Western Reserve University Saturday in Cleveland.
Case remained undefeated at 8-0 and improved to 1-0 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU fell to 2-6 and 0-2 in UAA play. This marked the final game for WashU in the UAA after 28 years.
Sophomore quarterback Johnny Davidson was picked off on the first play of the game, and Case scored seven plays later to make it 7-0. The Spartans forced another punt and answered with its second TD to make it 14-0.
Senior running back David Nees scored from four yards out to trim the lead to 21-7 in the second quarter, but Case added a late field goal to take a 24-7 halftime advantage.
Case had a 233-127 advantage in total offense in the first half, and the Bears were hampered by six penalties for 67 yards and had three turnovers.
Junior wide receiver Jason Singer hauled in an eight-yard TD reception from Davison with 6:10 left in the third quarter to trim the lead to 31-14. The Spartans extended their lead to 45-14 with a pair of scores.
Junior quarterback Ryan Arthur connected with junior wide receiver Alex Fehlinger for a three-yard and a 28-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.
Davidson completed 16-of-25 passes for 165 yards with one TD and two interceptions. He also fumbled twice, as the Bears committed five turnovers in the loss. Arthur was 7-of-12 for 123 yards and two touchdowns with an interception.
Fehlinger finished the day with a career-high four catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns, while Singer had five catches for 62 yards and a TD. The Bears had 369 yards of total offense, including 288 through the air.
Sophomore linebacker Jarrod Huther recorded a game-high 13 tackles (10 assisted), while junior defensive back Ben Marcus added 11. Senior defensive lineman Nick Leduc was all over the field with six tackles, including two for loss, and a sack.
WashU has another bye week before closing out regular-season play on Saturday, Nov. 11, against Bridgewater College (Va.). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Francis Field.
