Thomas More Defeats Traditional Rival Hanover, 27-18

(HANOVER, Ind.) – The Thomas More football team defeated traditional rival Hanover College, 27-18, today (Saturday, September 8, 2018) on C. Wayne Perry Field at Alumni Stadium in Hanover, Indiana.

The Saints improve to 1-1 and the Panthers fall to 0-2.

FIRST QUARTER:

  • Thomas More took a 7-0 lead when junior quarterback Justin Post (Macedonia, Ohio/Nordonia) scored on an 11-yard run and junior kicker Cole Mathias (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) added the PAT with 5:43 to play in the first quarter.
  •  Hanover cut the lead to 7-6 with 5:06 to play in the quarter when Noah Wezensky connected on a 71-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Daugherty and Dozier Combs' PAT was no good.

SECOND QUARTER:

  • Senior running back Hjavier Pitts (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mt. Healthy) scored on a one-yard run and Mathias added the PAT to extend the Saints' lead to 14-6 with 3:35 to play in the quarter.

THIRD QUARTER:

  • Thomas More increased the lead to 20-6 with 8:34 to play in the quarter when Post scored on a seven-yard run and Mathias' PAT failed.
  • With 5:08 to play in the quarter, Wezensky connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jared Frank and Combs' PAT was no good to cut the Saints' lead to 20-12
  • Pitts scored on a 38-yard touchdown run and Mathias added the PAT to give Thomas More a 27-12 lead with 1:54 to play in the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:

  • Hanover's Frank caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Wezensky and the two-point attempt failed to cut the Saints' lead to 27-18 with 3:47 to play.
  • Thomas More then ran the clock out for the 27-18 road victory.

NOTEABLES:

  • Thomas More out-gained Hanover 487 yards (280 rushing/207 passing) to 336 yards (93 rushing/243 passing.
  • First career head coaching victory for first-year Thomas More Head Coach Trevor Stellman.
  • Post was 19-of-31 passing for 207 yards and had eight rushes for 28 yard and two touchdowns.
  • Pitts finished the game with 26 carries for 140 yard and two touchdowns.
  • Senior running back Luke Zajac (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) had 27 rushes for 112 yards.
  • Junior wide receiver Mitchell Hogue (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison) had eight catches for 72 yards.
  • Junior wide receiver Da'marco Canty (Bogart, Ga./North Oconee) had four receptions for 64 yards.
  • First-year defensive back Peyton Van Horn (Hebron, Ky./Conner) led the defense with nine tackles (four solo/five assisted).
  • Junior defensive back Thomas Williams (Oregonia, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) had eight tackles (four solo/four assisted).
  • Senior defensive back Steven Everson (Scottdale, Ga./Heritage) had six tackles (four solo/two assisted.
