Kenosha, Wis., Sept. 28, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team limited host Carthage College to 247 yards of total offense and forced 11 punts in a 21-10 road win Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
Trailing 3-0 entering the fourth quarter, senior QB Johnny Davidson had a pair of touchdowns and senior RB John Fisher added a 15-yard TD run as WashU scored 21-unaswered points in the final quarter.
Senior Jeff Marek led the WashU defense with a career-high 11 tackles, while junior Jack Schumacher added a pair of sacks in the win.
WashU improved its overall record to 2-1 and 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Carthage dropped to 1-2 and 1-1 in the CCIW.
WashU's defense was the story in the first quarter as the Bears allowed just 33 yards on 18 plays and forced four punts.
With the offense struggling to move the ball, the defense continued to dominate. WashU forced punts on 7-of-8 Carthage possessions in the opening half, limiting the Red Men to 83 yards on 37 plays. Marek had seven tackles in the first half.
Fisher had a 73-yard run in the second quarter which set up a scoring opportunity, but freshman Chris Vartanian had his 20-yard field goal blocked. Davidson was 14-of-23 for 88 yards and was picked off twice in the first half.
The teams combined for five punts in the third, but Carthage got on the scoreboard with a 42-yard field goal by David Collins on the final play of the quarter.
A 34-yard pass from Davidson to senior Mitchel Groen early in the fourth quarter set up a 15-yard TD run by Fisher to give WashU the 7-3 lead with 13:19 to play. Davidson scored from a yard out, and then he hit Groen for a 37-yard TD pass to push the lead to 21-3.
Davidson finished the day 27-of-41 for 298 yards and a TD, while Fisher ran for 98 yards and a TD. Groen had seven catches for 128 yards and a TD. WashU totaled 450 yards of total offense in the win.
WashU hosts North Park University on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m., as the Bears celebrate All-Sports Recognition and Military Appreciation Day.
