HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Brevard College football team (0-2) fell 31-17 to Hampden-Sydney College (1-1) in a lengthy non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.
Brevard battled back from down 17-0 to tie things up after 10 points in the second quarter followed by a touchdown score on the first Tornado possession of the second half, however Hampden-Sydney answered back with 14 unanswered points and a few big defensive stands to close the game out in its favor.
The matchup marked the first between the two institutions on the gridiron, and both teams were forced to battle the elements in addition to each other, as on the first possession of the game a lengthy lightning delay ensued, forcing the two sides back to the locker rooms. The delay caused halftime to be shortened to five minutes as well.
Sophomore quarterback Ethan Beamish continued to impress in the early stages of his Tornado career, as the first-year BC signal caller was a highly-efficient 30-for-39 with 265 yards and a touchdown pass to his credit. HSC's Carter Sido went 15-for-25 for 151 yards and a pair of touchdown throws, while Andrew Puccinelli added a 5-for-6 effort with 70 yards and a touchdown.
Senior running back Chancellor Lee-Parker had a career day manning the backfield for the Tornados, as the Auburn, Georgia product rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries (8.8 avg). Beamish added 34 yards while DJ Taylor accounted for 29 yards on seven carries. HSC's efficient ground attack was paced by Melik Frost, who totaled 103 yards on 23 carries.
Senior wideout Zackary Orr led the Tornados in receiving yards for the second-consecutive contest, as he hauled in seven catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Cooper Hogan added five catches for 83 yards, while Adam Douglas totaled 64 yards on five receptions. All told, 10 different Tornados caught Beamish passes. Mason Cunningham led the Tigers with a game-high 103 yards and a touchdown on five catches.
Playing in his first contest of the season, Grequenceo Coger Jr. led all Tornados with seven tackles and ½ TFL, as Toby Naylor, James Woods, and Terrion Burgess also had five tackles. Hampden-Sydney as a unit totaled a sack, five tackles-for-loss, a fumble recovery and an interception.
BC was able to gain two more first downs than HSC and outgained the Tigers in total offense, but Brevard's two turnovers and slow start proved costly.
Brevard will look for a win as the Tornados return home to face Averett University at Ives-Lemel Family Field next Saturday, September 16 at 6 p.m. as part of Family Weekend on the Brevard College campus. Fans are encouraged to wear black to "Black Out" Ives-Lemel Family Field, and the game's corporate feature sponsor is Jet's Pizza.
