Generals Hammer Hornets in Regular Season Finale

WINCHESTER, Va. - Playing their last regular season game of the season, the Washington and Lee University football team scored early and often in a 40-21 rout of Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon at Shentel Stadium. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter | 7-7 Tied

  • The Generals won the coin toss and elected to receive. The Blue and White offense wasted no time as they marched 75-yards on 11 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Jacob Romero capped off the drive with a 27-yard rushing touchdown. 
  • Shenandoah found the end zone on their first drive of the game as Steven Hugney capped off the 12-play, 73-yard drive with a one yard scamper to tie the game at seven. 


Second Quarter | 19-7 W&L

  • The Generals next drive extended into the second quarter and on 4th and 2, Stephen Murrinfound Evan Novak in the endzone for a two-yard score to put the Blue and White up 14-7. 
  • Shenandoah's next drive was halted as Hugney's pass on 4th and 5 fell short of Andre Jackson, forcing a turnover on downs. 
  • On W&L's next drive, Marcus Payne took a handoff left and sprinted 36-yards to the endzone to cap off the Generals' seven-play, 72-yard drive. After a failed PAT, the Generals held a 19-7 advantage. 


Third Quarter | 34-7 W&L

  • Washington and Lee's defense forced a three and out on the Hornets first drive of the second half as Will Knight sacked Hugney on 3rd and 13. 
  • The Generals found the endzone for the fourth time on their fifth drive as Murrin connected with Sophomore Dryden Duggins 47-yard score to put the Generals up 27-7 with 10:58 left in the third quarter. 
  • After the defense forced another turnover on downs, Murrin led the Generals 60-yards on 11-plays for their fifth score of the day. Romero punched it in from one yard out for his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon. 


Fourth Quarter | 40-21 W&L

  • Burke Cigelske scored the Generals final points of the day as he capped off the 12-play, 72-yard drive with a three yard score. During the drive, Murrin connected with Cigelske for a 29-yard gain in the air. 
  • Shenandoah responded with a touchdown of their own as Jalen Redfearn capped off the nine-play, 53-yard drive with an eight yard rushing touchdown. 
  • The Hornets final drive of the game resulted in seven points as Hugney found Caleb Reedt for an eight-yard passing touchdown to bring the score to 40-21. 


W&L GAME NOTES

  • The Generals finish the regular season with an 8-2 record while posting a 6-1 record in conference play. 
  • The Blue and White offense generated 438 yards of total offense on 75 plays while averaging 5.8 yards per play. On the ground, the Generals rushed 62 times for 297 yards and four touchdwons while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. They were 12 of 13 in the air for 141 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 11.8 yards per completion. 
  • Washington and Lee was 10 of 16 (66%) on third down while converting on all four of their fourth down attempts. The offense possessed the ball for 37:15, their second highest time of possession this season. 
  • The Generals defense held the Hornets to under 300 yards of total offense while holding Shenandoah's rushing game to 99 yards. The Blue and White recorded fours sacks this afternoon. 


SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES

  • The Hornets end their season with a 5-5 record and a 3-4 mark in ODAC play. 
  • Shenandoah generated 287 yards of total offense, rushing for 99 yards and throwing for 188. The Hornets ran 63 total plays, averaging 4.6 yards per play. 
  • SU was 5 of 14 (36%) on third down while converting four of their seven (57%) fourth down attempts. 


TOP PERFORMERS

  • Stephen Murrin completed 11 of his 12 passes for 136 yards adn two touchdowns while rushing for 85 yards. Shenandoah's Steven Hugney was 22 of 39 for 188 yards and one touchdown. 
  • Jacob Romero led all rushers with 91 yards on the ground while finding the endzone twice. The junior running back averaged 3.6 yards per carry while catching one pass for four yards. 
  • Dryden Duggins caught four passes for 70 yards while hauling in a 47-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. 
  • Jack Johnson led the Generals with a career-high nine tackles, four solo and five assists. Will MahmudNathan UngerUno Christopher and Will Knight each had one sack and one tackle for loss this afternoon. 


UP NEXT

  • The Generals will host the first ever Chesapeake Challenge next Saturday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. at Wilson Field. The opponent will be announced tomorrow following the NCAA selection show at 1 p.m.
