Hampden-Sydney Earns Home Shutout Past Guilford (NC) 31-0

More news about: Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore running back Terry Hicks (Clayton, NC) rushed for a game-high 97 yards and two touchdowns, and junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido (Dallas, TX) passed for 113 yards and one touchdown, adding 78 yards rushing and one touchdown, as Hampden-Sydney College took a 31-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football home shutout win past Guilford (NC) College on Saturday afternoon on Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Senior linebacker and team captain Brendan Wallace (Virginia Beach) had a career-high and game-high 13 tackles, including two for loss with a sack, as the host Tigers (3-1, 1-0) won their third-straight contest and posted their first shutout since March 5, 2021 (during the COVID-19 spring season, 26-0 vs. Shenandoah). H-SC led 7-0 at halftime against the visiting Quakers (3-1, 0-1), before outscoring them 24-0 in the second half—freshman running back Kaelan Ferris (McLean) adding a career-high 87 yards rushing, and first-year head coach Vince Luvara gaining his first conference victory with the Garnet & Grey.

"Great team win over a very good opponent," said Luvara. "Really proud of how hard we played and the finish of our team."

H-SC scored the first points of the Family Weekend contest witnessed by a season-high crowd of 5,018 when Sido connected with sophomore wide receiver Ethan Dowdy (Powhatan) for a 31-yard touchdown pass at 3:27 of the first quarter. Senior placekicker Elijah Swett (Matthews, NC) added the first of his four PAT kicks for the early 7-0 advantage. It capped a six-play, 67-yard drive that included Hicks covering 18 yards on three attempts, and the score remained 7-0 after the opening 15 minutes of action.

Neither team was able to score during the second quarter as the Tigers forced GC into turning the ball over on downs two times along with a punt, while the home team turned it over on downs once, punted once and had a pass intercepted in the end zone. Hicks had 50 yards rushing on five attempts during the quarter, while Wallace led the defense with four tackles, including two for loss and the sack—the score remaining 7-0 at halftime.

The Garnet & Grey added two third-quarter touchdowns, both scored by Hicks … the first a 21-yard run via a direct snap on fourth-and-one at 13:38, and the second a three-yard run on another direct snap on first-and-goal at 5:13. The first score was set-up by a 61-yard kickoff return by junior safety Joseph Gonzalez (Spotsylvania) to begin the second half, a quick four-play, 30-yard possession. The second score finished a four-play, 75-yard possession that included a 25-yard pass from Sido to senior tight end Sutton Lasso (Raleigh, NC), followed by a 45-yard run by Ferris just ahead of the touchdown. The defense forced three punts in the quarter with Wallace adding four more tackles toward a 21-0 margin after three quarters.

The Tigers added a fourth touchdown with 8:37 left to play when Sido ran five yards untouched to the end zone to complete a quick three-play, 10-yard possession. An interception by junior linebacker Max Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) that he returned 23 yards provided for the great field position and the 28-0 advantage.

The Quakers managed to drive to the H-SC 34-yard line on its next possession, but freshman cornerback Parks Cromwell (Charlotte, NC) ended the threat with his second interception of the season that he returned 24 yards. The Tigers were essentially able to run out the clock, driving 64 yards on nine plays with Swett adding his second field goal of the season, a 36-yard attempt with only 16-seconds remaining, to provide for the final margin and the first ODAC win for Coach Luvara.

Sido passed for 113 yards (10-22-1) and one touchdown with one interception for H-SC, adding 78 yards rushing on 15 attempts and one touchdown. Hicks rushed for his game-high 97 yards on 12 attempts and two touchdowns, while Ferris had his career-high 87 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Dowdy had 65 yards receiving on five receptions and one touchdown, while Sutton Lasso had 31 yards receiving on two receptions. Gonzalez had the one kickoff return for 61 yards, while sophomore punter Camden Richardson (Midlothian) averaged 41.3 yards on three punts, including a career-long 55-yard punt, with two downed inside the 20.

Wallace finished with his career-high and game-high 13 tackles, including two for loss with the sack for the Tigers. Junior nose tackle Andrew Arthur-Humphrey (Woodbridge) and junior linebacker and team captain Robert Clarke (Atlanta, Ga) each had eight tackles, including 1.5 for loss with a sack by Clarke. Pickren and senior safety Joseph Pierre (Mobile, AL) each added seven tackles with Pickren having half a tackle for loss and the interception, while senior nickelback Kyle Lafayette (Charleston, SC) finished with a career-high six tackles and a pass breakup. Cromwell contributed three tackles, his interception, a forced fumble and a pass breakup, while junior linebacker Eddie Allen (Richmond) had two tackles, including one for loss with a sack, along with a forced fumble and two quarterback hurries.

Caleb Robles passed for a game-high 206 yards (10-25-1) with one interception for GC. Malik Woodard had 48 yards rushing on 15 attempts. Jay Daniels had a game-high 129 yards receiving on five receptions. Avery Garner had eight tackles, including 0.5 for loss with a half-sack, for the Quakers.

H-SC will play on the road next week at ODAC member Washington and Lee University on Saturday, October 12, at 1 p.m. in Lexington.
