More news about: Waynesburg

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (October 5) – The Waynesburg University football team suffered a 42-0 setback at No. 15 Carnegie Mellon at Richard M. Lackner Field at Gesling Stadium on Saturday night.

Waynesburg falls to 1-4 on the season and in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Carnegie Mellon remains unbeaten at 5-0.

The Jackets received the opening kickoff and moved the ball on the nationally-ranked Tartans as Waynesburg pick up three first downs, the last coming on a roughing the punter personal foul. Following a Waynesburg punt later in the drive, the Jacket defense prompted a Carnegie Mellon punt after a sack and forced fumble by Diontae Givens (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Sto-Rox) backed the Tartans up to third-and-46 from inside their own 20.

Despite the competitive start, several miscues allowed Carnegie Mellon to establish a 21-0 halftime lead.

The Tartans blocked a Waynesburg punt and returned it for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead in the final minute of the first quarter. After a Jacket three-and-out, Carnegie Mellon marched 48 yards in seven plays and cashed in with a four-yard touchdown pass less than four minutes into the second quarter.

A 24-yard run by Zayne Cawley (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) set the Jackets up inside the Carnegie Mellon 30, but Waynesburg's 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked.

Waynesburg's defense rallied for a three-and-out and another 20-yard dash by Cawley put the Jackets in Carnegie Mellon territory. However, a snap over the head of quarterback Samuel Barber (Johnstown, Pa. / Greater Johnstown) was recovered by the Tartans, who drove 44 yards to go ahead 21-0 with 1:03 remaining in the first half.

Jack Nagy (Attleboro, Mass. / Attleboro) and John Stewart (Lancaster, Pa. / JP McCaskey) combined for a 16-yard sack to sink Carnegie Mellon's opening drive of the second half.

Carnegie Mellon had two 70-yard drives that resulted in touchdowns and blocked a fourth quarter punt to set up another scoring drive as the hosts' lead grew to the final score line of 42-0 five minutes into the fourth quarter.

Cawley powered the Jackets offense with 144 rushing yards, his third 100-yard rushing outing of the season. Carnegie Mellon entered the contest with the No. 6 rushing defense in the nation, allowing just 44.0 yards per game through the first four weeks of the year.

Barber completed a dozen passes for 67 yards with Tyler Richmond (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) and Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) each reeling in four catches.

Brennan Boron (St. Mary's, W.Va. / St. Marys) led the Waynesburg defense with 10 total tackles, six solo and a pass break up. Jemuel Cypress (Seat Pleasant, Md. / Charles Herbert Flowers) and JaVionne Smith (Warren, Ohio / Sharon (Pa.)) each had seven tackles. Jeremiah Hall (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Perry) recorded six tackles and two pass break ups. Givens had four tackles, a sack and forced fumble.

The Jackets are idle next weekend before hosting Bethany on homecoming on Oct. 19.
