Shorthanded Red Hawks Fall to Chicago

More news about: Ripon

RIPON, Wisconsin — The Ripon football program gave up 17 points over a seven-minute, second-quarter stretch on Saturday afternoon as the Red Hawks fell 30-6 to the University of Chicago at Hopp Stadium.

After a pair of punts to open the game, Chicago (3-3, 3-2 MWC) drove inside the Ripon 40 midway through the first quarter. Nolan Perry punched out a would-be first down on 3rd and 8 for the Maroons, and Wes Schneider scooped it up to keep Ripon (2-4, 2-3 MWC) out of harm's way in the early going.

The two teams combined for five punts before points went up on the board – on Chicago's first drive of the second quarter, Teddy Gouldin threw a two-yard touchdown pass on 4th and goal to Mozes Mooney, giving the visitors an early lead.

Following a short Ripon punt, Chicago took over inside the Ripon 40. Walter Kilgore nailed a 51-yard field goal moments later, extending the opposition's lead with 6:59 left until half.

On the ensuing possession, sophomore quarterback Aidan Keyes – making his first start under center on Saturday – drove Ripon into Chicago territory. However, his pass was picked off by Jake Horowitz and returned 61 yards for a score as the Red Hawks trailed 17-0 at half.

Ripon punted on its opening drive of the second half, and Chicago capitalized. Kyle James rushed into the end zone from three yards out, and the Maroons led 23-0 with 5:52 remaining in the third quarter after the Red Hawks blocked the PAT attempt.

After a fourth quarter Ripon turnover, Chicago scored on a five-yard touchdown pass, extending its advantage to 30-0 halfway through the final stanza.

The Red Hawks continued to fight, finding the back of the end zone before the day ended as freshman quarterback Brady Immel provided a spark off the bench. A 10-play, 75-yard drive ended with a six-yard Immel touchdown run – the first of his career – to get Ripon on the board. However, the extra point was blocked and the score was 30-6 with 2:28 left in the game.

Chicago bled the clock for the remainder of the game and picked up the road, Midwest Conference win.

Keyes went 5-of-8 for 40 yards with an interception as the starter. Immel was 3-of-6 for 45 yards through the air, and rushed 11 times for 59 yards and a score. Connor Ramage was Ripon's top rusher, carrying the ball 15 times for 61 yards. Carl Travis hauled in 3 catches for 45 yards, while Alex Mosqueda caught three balls for 38 yards.

Defensively, Clay Ritschard had a game-high 11 tackles, while Zane VetterDesean Smith and Drew Love all recorded tackles for loss.

Ripon had a slight 171-168 edge in rushing yards, though Chicago had a sizable 123-85 advantage through the air and had 291 total yards to Ripon's 256. The Maroons were 50% on third down (7-of-14) and scored on all three red zone chances. Ripon was 3-of-11 on third down, had a 32:45 to 27:15 edge in time of possession and scored on its only red zone trip.

NEXT UP: Ripon kicks off its two-game road trip next Saturday (October 26) with a 1 p.m. start at Lake Forest.
