DANVILLE, Va. – The Yellow Jacket offense collected more than 430 yards of total offense as No. 23 Randolph-Macon registered a 49-10 ODAC win at Averett on Saturday evening.

The Basics:

How it Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and drove 79 yards in 12 plays, as junior running back Mitchell Johnson (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) scored from four yards out to give RMC a 7-0 lead seven minutes into the contest.
  • The RMC defense held the Cougars without a first down on their first possession. Following a punt, the Yellow Jackets went 56 yards in nine plays, as senior tailback Kwesi Clarke (Reigelwood, N.C./North Brunswick) reached the end zone from one yard out to make it 14-0 with 2:47 left in the first period.
  • On a pass completion, senior linebacker Tony Skinner (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) forced a fumble and senior cornerback Tony Highter (Chesapeake, Va. / Indian River) recovered at the AU 20. Junior running back DJ James (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) scored on a five-yard run at RMC went up 21-0 with 29 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Following another punt, the Yellow Jackets moved 46 yards in five plays, with Johnson reaching the end zone from eight yards out to extend the advantage to 28-0 with 11:31 left in the second period.
  • Averett moved to the RMC 24 and hit a 42-yard field goal to trail 28-3 midway through the second quarter.
  • Senior safety Torryn Carey-Jarrell (Richmond, Va./Henrico) blocked a punt late in the second period, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball on the AU 24. Freshman quarterback Ryley Justus (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) connected with junior wide receiver Jason Moore (Craven County, N.C./Havelock) on a 24-yard scoring pass as RMC led 35-3 at intermission.
  • Late in the third period, Justis found senior wide receiver Jack Landis (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) on an 86-yard TD pass to extend the advantage to 42-3.
  • Freshman safety Caden Bradford (Chesapeake, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk) stepped in front of a receiver at the AU 33 and returned it to the AU 3. Junior running back Cameron Chatmon (Willow Spring, N.C./Green Level) scored from the three on the final play of the third quarter to make it 49-3.
  • The Cougars snagged an interception early in the fourth period that they turned into a touchdown to make the final 49-10.

By The Numbers:

  • RMC had 47 carries for 242 yards and five touchdowns. Four different players rushed for at least 36 yards, led by Chatmon with eight rushes for 54 yards and one score.
  • Three Yellow Jacket quarterbacks completed 14 of 20 passes for 189 yards and two scores. Justus went 6 for 8 for 135 yards and two TDs.
  • Sophomore Basit Qadri (Ashburn, Va./Rock Ridge) had four receptions for 40 yards.
  • Sophomore linebacker Jacob Lail (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) topped the Yellow Jackets with seven tackles. Junior linebacker Brandon Watson had six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss (minus-12 yards), one quarterback sack (minus-8 yards) and one forced fumble.

For The Record:

  • The Yellow Jackets have won all 12 meetings with Averett.
  • RMC has won 21 consecutive ODAC contests, dating back to the 2021 season.
  • Senior kicker Kyle Ihle (Apex, N.C./Middle Creek) made all seven PAT kicks to move into third place in ODAC history with 159 career PAT kicks.
