SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College football team scored the first 31 points of the afternoon and cruised the rest of the way, remaining unbeaten in Liberty League play and extending its winning streak to six games with a 34-13 victory over Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Union (6-2, 5-0 Liberty League) spread the wealth on both sides of the ball on Saturday, with six different quarterbacks attempting a pass, eight different players recording at least one rush, and 10 players recording one catch each.
Junior Cole Brisson led the quarterbacks with 62 yards on 3-of-4 passing, while senior Patch Flanagan made the most of his limited time behind center with five completions (including two touchdowns) and two rushes for 32 yards. Seniors Cam Fries and Gil Rivera caught touchdowns from Flanagan on the day as well.
First-year Justin Singh led the backs with 72 yards on 10 carries and both Brisson and sophomore Jah'Cire Jones reached the end zone on the ground. As a team, Union ran 40 times for 234 yards, an average of 5.9 yards per rush.
On the defensive side, an impressive 29 players recorded at least one tackle on the day, led by junior Daniel O'Leary with seven stops. First-year Myles Beckett chipped in with five tackles and also returned a fumble 28 yards, while sophomore Michael Barnes-Pace also recovered a fumble for the home team.
Union got the ball first and quickly got into the red zone, with sophomore Calvin Williams recording 35 yards on four carries to get in position for a 26-yard field goal from sophomore Francesco Pileggi. After a bad snap on Hilbert's first possession gave Union the ball back inside the five-yard line, Jones recorded his first touchdown as a Garnet Charger to quickly build the lead to 10 less than seven minutes into the game.
Hilbert held the ball for over 11 minutes on its next possession, but a big tackle for loss by senior David Seiche halted the drive and got the ball back after 16 plays. Union then responded with a 15-play, 72-yard drive of its own, converting three third downs and one fourth down on the way to the end zone. Flanagan found Fries on a 10-yard touchdown catch to make the score 17-0. The home team tacked on one more score before the half on a one-yard pitch-and-catch from Flanagan to a wide-open Rivera.
The home team scored its final touchdown of the game on its first drive of the third quarter. A 42-yard toss from Brisson to junior Owen Corrigan got Union off its own one-yard line after the defensive made a stand at the goal line, and Brisson finished the drive with a four-yard touchdown run.
Union will make its final road trip of the regular season next Saturday with a noon matchup at the University of Rochester.
