Widener beat its rival in quadruple overtime, Marietta won a shootout and Allegheny snapped a long losing streak in Saturday's Week 5 action in Division III football.
Widener and Lycoming have played some great overtime games and some great low-scoring games, but perhaps not a combination of the two like they did today as Widener came away with a 24-21 road win in quadruple overtime. Lycoming hasn't won at home vs. Widener since 2010, and Widener crushed the Warriors 48-7 last season in Chester, Pa.
Chase Whiteman hit Nick Costello for a 41-yard TD pass with 2:08 left in regulation to tie the game. The teams traded touchdowns in the second overtime and Michael Raczak ended the game with a 33-yard field goal in the fourth extra session.
Darren Fields threw for five touchdowns, but it was his 17-yard scramble for a touchdown with 33 seconds left that provided the final margin as Marietta picked up its first win of the season in memorable fashion, defeating Baldwin Wallace 62-56. The sophomore was 27-for-35 passing for 364 yards and was intercepted just once. Neither team led by more than eight and the teams combined to punt just four times. The schools played three high-scoring games in men's basketball last season, with Marietta winning 93-78, 90-70 and 91-66.
Allegheny jumped out quickly, scoring the first 20 points of the game, and snapped a 22-game losing streak by defeating Oberlin 26-21. Logan Lee threw a 29-yard touchdown pass and ran for a 46-yard score sandwiched around a 51-yard interception return for a TD by Travis Thomas in the first quarter. The Yeomen's final drive stalled at the Allegheny 31 with four minutes left and the Gators were able to run out the clock.
Ithaca scored a season-high 23 points, and it was enough to hand Utica its first loss of the season, 23-14. The Pioneers, who had beaten two teams who had entered their game as ranked teams, managed just 29 yards on the ground and fell to 4-1. Tristan Brown ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The Bombers had scored just 23 points in their first three games combined.
The Washington University defense limited Berry to a season-low point total and recorded three interceptions in a 34-10 win Saturday night in St. Louis. WashU scored 17 points in the final 6:16 to knock Berry from the unbeaten ranks. The Vikings entered the contest averaging 40.3 points per game. Senior quarterback J.J. Tomlin completed 35-of-48 passes for 389 yards and two touchdowns. Tomlin upped his career passing total to 6,657 yards, and is 57 yards shy of breaking the WashU all-time mark.
Billy Pine had a prolific afternoon passing, throwing for more than 130 yards to three separate receivers, but Cortland had a huge second half to rally for a 50-47 win vs. Hartwick. The Red Dragons (3-2, 1-2 Empire 8) scored 36 second-half points, 10 of them in the final 3:12 as Shane Cronin kicked a 34-yard field goal with 26 seconds left for the win.
Centre could not find a way to stop Seth Peters, as the Hendrix quarterback rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown and threw for 308 yards and two scores in the Warriors' 35-28 win in a battle of unbeatens. Hendrix got the ball back on the 3-yard line with the lead and 8:35 left and never gave the ball up, running 13 plays to run out the clock.
Brand Davis kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired and Carleton handed Hamline its first loss of the season by a 34-31 final. Carleton's home game was moved from its on-campus field because of flooding on the Cannon River.
Brendan Bunisch caught four touchdowns and Alfred piled up 625 yards of total offense as the Saxons improved to 5-0, defeating Morrisville State 49-24. Morrisville is 0-4, but the teams it has faced this season are a combined 16-3 through Saturday.
It was a lopsided battle of unbeatens as Guilford went up 35-0 in the first 15 minutes and cruised to a 59-0 win vs. Catholic. The Cardinals were held to 71 yards of total offense in their ODAC opener after a 3-0 start. Karsten Miller threw for five TDs for the Quakers (4-0).
Rhodes rolled up an SAA-record 683 yards of total offense and eased past archrival Sewanee 36-21. It's the fifth win in a row and the 10th win in 11 years in the battle for the Orgill Cup. P.J. Settles threw for 384 yards and ran for 108, while Roc Sherrell ran for 162 yards and two scores on 14 carries.
Derek Victory threw a pair of touchdowns and ran for another while Chip Crowley returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown as Coast Guard held off Maine Maritime 36-30. ... Monmouth roared out to a 34-0 lead and four Scots scored rushing touchdowns in a 57-14 win vs. Cornell. ... UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse each remained undefeated overall as well. The Pointers defeated Eau Claire 28-19 while La Crosse topped River Falls 35-14.
