Two coaches reached the 200-win milestone for their careers mere hours apart on Saturday, while Westminster (Pa.) defeated Washington & Jefferson for the first time since 2000 and Dubuque survived a triple-overtime thriller vs. Buena Vista.
Wash U prevailed at the end of a crazy final few seconds that saw the Bears take two timeouts, then Millsaps get called for a false start, then the Bears block a 29-yard field goal attempt to preserve a 31-28 win. The victory was the 200th in the coaching career of Larry Kindbom, who is now No. 3 among active Division III coaches in career victories.
Also No. 3? Rich Lackner of Carnegie Mellon. His Tartans defeated Thiel on Saturday by a 49-33 score. All 200 of Lackner's wins have come at CMU, where he has coached for 31 seasons.
Kindbom has a 16-12 edge in head-to-head games between the two, including a 41-34 win in the opening game of the season. The teams competed together for many years in the University Athletic Association.
Justin Dahl hit three field goals and Todd Jeter intercepted Pete Coughlin in the end zone, one of three picks of the Presidents' quarterback on the afternoon. He was also sacked five times as the Westminster defense limited W&J to 262 total yards. It was the Titans' first win vs. the Presidents since Westminster became full Division III members.
Hobart rallied from a fourth-quarter deficit for the fourth time this season as Shane Sweeney hit Brandon Shed for an 18-yard touchdown with 1:47 left in the game for a 12-7 win vs. Springfield. The Statesmen improved to 6-1 and stayed in line for a Liberty League showdown with St. Lawrence in Week 10. It was the 500th win in the history of the program.
Conor Feckley and the Dubuque offense finally broke through in the third overtime and the Spartans held off Buena Vista 45-37 in triple overtime. Feckley threw his third touchdown pass of the afternoon, an 11-yarder to Dylan Schultz, to complete the rally after BVU jumped out to a 17-0 lead.
Nick Savant rushed for a school-record 277 yards and four touchdowns to lead Muhlenberg to a 56-17 home win against Juniata. Savant scored on runs of 8, 30, 9 and 61 yards to tie a school record for touchdowns in a game and help the Mules (6-1, 5-1 Centennial Conference) overcome an early 10-0 deficit.
Frostburg State scored the first 17 points of the game and extended its winning streak to five consecutive games with a 17-6 win vs. Christopher Newport. The Bobcats remained in the first place tie with Salisbury and Wesley in the New Jersey Athletic Conference at 5-1 in the conference, 6-1 overall. The Bobcat defense entered the contest ranked 11th in the nation in total defense and Frostburg held CNU to just 269 yards in offense and forced two turnovers.
Washington & Lee remains in sole possession of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference as the Generals rolled over Hamden-Sydney 52-7. Marshall Hollerith ran for 127 yards, Evan Hinkle added 119, Connor Chess 84 and Matt Sgro and Josh Malm put up 64 rushing yards apiece in the victory.
UW-La Crosse struggled without starting quarterback Tarek Yaeggi, the transfer from Division I Buffalo, and UW-Eau Claire won its first WIAC game of the season, defeating the Eagles 20-14. JT DenHartog was 10-for-13 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown. Yaeggi suffered a shoulder injury in the win vs. Whitewater in Week 7 and did not play on Saturday.
Brockport quarterback Joe Germinerio completed 18 of 27 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown and rushed 31 times for 188 yards and two scores and the Golden Eagles held on to defeat visiting Cortland 21-19. The Red Dragons were outgained 520-285 in total offensive yards, but remained close by forcing four Brockport turnovers.
Dominick Orsini rolled up more rushing yards than anyone had for Ohio Wesleyan in 110 years, and threw for 242 yards as well as the Battling Bishops tamed the Tigers of DePauw 37-14. Orsini ran for 252 yards on 25 carries, scoring on touchdown runs of 37, 7, and 4 yards. The 252 yards trails only a 280-yard performance by James Rike against Western Reserve on Nov. 24, 1906.
Braden Black threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Andre Houston in overtime to lead Olivet to a thrilling 54-48 win over Benedictine in a matchup of conference contenders in the MIAA and NACC.
Mass-Dartmouth rolled up 705 yards of total offense and allowed just 173 yards on defense in a 33-0 thrashing of Mass Maritime. ... Trine scored the first seven points of the game but Hope scored the other 31 in a 31-7 win. ... Alma brought its "A" game and Albion turned the ball over four times as the Scots won 37-14 to improve to 5-2. Albion is 0-7.
