Stout scores single game scoring record for second consecutive week

MENOMONIE, WIs. - The 100th meeting went the way of the Blue Devils as UW-Stout (3-1, 1-0) dominated UW-Eau Claire (1-3, 0-1) 73-29 Saturday night at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

Not much could stop the Blue Devils in a 73-29 romp over the Blugolds Saturday night. Stout scored 10 touchdowns and ran up nearly 700 yards of offense in the big win.

After Eau Claire was held to a field goal on their first possession the Blue Devils wasted no time responding, Arthur Cox took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to give the Blue Devils the lead for good. The PAT was blocked but fell into the Mack Klafter's hands and he ran it in for the 2-point conversion for an 8-3 lead.

On the Blue Devils next possession, quarterback Sean Borgerding found Levy Hamer for a 75 yard connection to set the Blue Devils up inside the red zone. three player later Borgerding found Hamer again for a two-yard score and the rout was on.

Stout forced a Blugold punt and methodically moved the ball down the field on a nine play 80 yard drive that culminated in a JD Bates 1-yard touchdown plunge to build the lead up to 22-3 early in the second quarter.

After another Blugold three-and-out Borgerding found Will Knutson for a 23-yard score.

Borgerding was 17 of 28 for 291 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran the ball five times for 27 yards.

Cox scored his second touchdown of the day on a seven yard pass and catch to extend the lead to 36-3.

Cox finished with 161 all-purpose yards: 95 on the kick return, 46 rushing, 23 receiving. He also had 48 yards passing.

Eau Claire's only offense spark in the first half came from Ivan Ruble who broke a tackle and raced 75 yards for the score to trim the lead to 36-9.

Ruble carried the ball 21 times for 165 yards for the Blugolds.

Luke Cool's 39-yard field goal gave the Blue Devils a 39-9 half time lead.

Borgerding threw two more touchdown passes in the third quarter, one for 25 and 42 yards to build the lead to 53-15.

Carter Fonger then put on a rushing clinic in the fourth quarter, carrying the ball six times for 150 yards and three touchdowns. He had two long touchdowns runs of 55 and 67 yards.

Stout finished with 698 total offensive yards, 340 yards rushing and 358 through the air. The Blue Devils averaged 10.3 yards per play and earned 29 first downs. The defense had six pass break ups and six quarterback hurries and forced a turnover. Cannon Griner and Nathan Williamson each had six tackles while Carter Johnson, Klafter, and Nate Rewald each had five.

Eau Claire had 445 total yards and outside of Ruble had not much working on the ground.  Harry Roubidoux finished 16-38 for 2019 yards, two scores and an interception.
